My Odysseun saga has taken me all round the Yucatan peninsula and further, on various road trips. In these times of adversity I think I can safely quote Sinatra and say ‘I did it my way’
HONEST REPORTS, DAY BY DAY FROM QUARANTINE HOTEL HOLIDAY INN HEATHROW. (SEE DAY NINE HERE)
IN QUARANTINE HOTEL HELL A NEW CRUSHING BLOW, BRUTUS MY SONS BULLDOG BEEN TAKEN INTO HOSPITAL
Alert: Anyone wanting to chip in for the vet bills can do so at the go fund me address here, there’s a typo on the flyer https//gofund.me/66de2025
All other news from today has been made irrelevant as I just received a call from my son that Brutus our British Bulldog has been taken into hospital with severe breathing problems. This news is the final straw. This is new torture whilst I’m still not allowed to leave here until one minute past midnight. A day when I felt relatively happy has now developed into a terrible crying jag. I simply feel that the ground I walk on will never be safe again for this is literally the final straw. This wonderful kind magnificent boy is now in peril and only just turned six years of age, young even bulldog standards.
What they don’t tell you is that it’s miles from the highway. So daring Dan here negotiated for a ride there after buying an ice cold bottle of water and got myself a motorbike ride.
OR, THE GREAT PALENQUE RIP OFF
ALERT ALERT ALERT: A WORD OF CAUTION. GOOGLE PHOTOS, mysteriously disappeared swathes of photos from all of my trip thus far. Then a few days later more vanished back to September 2020. This is happening to many angry people apparently. They do not respond with this complaint by a crowd of furious clients who have lost precious memories. The fact mine went in swathes was very odd too. Lucky I am an anorak on trips and download to an external hard drive but I don’t have any pre trip photos and videos from September. Warn everyone as it seems to be a huge problem and they don’t respond. I seem to have permanently lost all Christmas pics and am heartbroken.
OR TOUGH ROAD TRIP FINALLY GETS ME THERE!
Journey to Palenque was long, I’d downloaded a crazy series to binge watch for the six hours which just about kept me sane as they pull the screens most of the way down on the ADO buses and have tinted glass and all sorts so no window gazing just navel and Netflix gazing.
OR GETTING TO THIS FAMOUS MAYAN SITE IN PUUL.
I’ve again written in my journal so straight from the horses mouth, on how I finally went from Tulum and to Uxmal via Merida.
OR HOW THIS PLACE HAS SAVED ME FROM A BREAKDOWN.
I now have rented an apartment and am cooking at home mostly. To have my little pad is very reassuring and makes me feel more permanent in Tulum. I will use it as a base because I still intend to bus it to to many sites further afield. Palenque, Xel-Ha, Zone Muyil, Kabah, Uxmal and Chicanna to name a few. It might seem foolhardy to rent a flat but having a base means that journeys are easier with less luggage and you can return to a home when you’re done with your visit. It’s a security blanket and you can save money cooking at home.
That already set the tone, how could I possibly believe in this tableau now? It was ruined. I was awakened now to the fact that people in villages here all had bloody mobile phones, there was no romantic idyllic pockets of untouched simple lives it was all smoke and mirrors.
I saw the owners son coming down the hill on his bicycle holding a hapless chuck by its legs flapping its wings wildly. A wicker basket with salad veg and herbs was attached to the back. The fat chef pointing at my approaching very alive bird shouted ‘Your dinner!’ grinning happily, I grinned back queasily.
Or infinity pools in heaven.
Alert: this was posted ages ago but now fits in sequentially and bears a second look at. I am updating it as I was in a rush before and this place would go on my top 10 list of places to go in the world!
OR HAND MADE COCKTAILS ON BOARD CHOO CHOO!!!
